Kodable Basics Event

Kodable's Basic's Valentine’s Day coding activity lets students code and decorate their very own Valentine's Day mazes for their loved ones. If you are using the Kodable App on iOS, you'll need to update to our latest version to access the activity.

Instructions

  1. Have students complete Kodable Basics. This is a quick 5-minute tutorial that auto-launches on their first login.

  2. Students will watch a short video and select "Code Your Valentine".

  3. They’ll follow the Maze Maker prompts to create a Valentine-themed maze.

  4. Once finished, students can write a sweet message to send home.

Teacher Tips

  • Maze Completion:
Guide students to design a maze that moves from left to right, ensuring there are no gaps and that all three stars are placed on the path.

  • Creative Prompts:
Write these ideas on the board to inspire student ideas:

    • Design a maze with 5 turns.

    • Spell a word like LOVE within the maze.

    • Add 10 decorations to make the maze unique.

Sharing Their Work

In Class:
Students can collaborate by trading devices to play and complete each other's mazes! This activity fosters peer-to-peer interaction, encouraging students to share strategies, problem-solve together, and provide constructive feedback.

At Home:
A PRO account allows students to play Kodable outside of school hours and on weekends. This means they can share their Valentine's maze creations with loved ones! Click here to learn more about PRO accounts for at-home use.

Steps to Share Work:

  1. Find your class codes on the teacher dashboard or refer to "Student Instructions".

  2. Students can sign into their Kodable account via the app or web.

  3. Students will select the "Play at School" option and enter their class code.

  4. They will be asked where they are playing and should click "Home".

  5. Once logged in, students can open and play their Valentine's maze or create new ones to share!

Kodable Creator Event: Valentine's Day Adventure

In this event, students will transform a platformer game into a festive Valentine’s adventure. Guided by Catbot, they’ll play through levels, reach the flag, and tackle creative challenges like updating backgrounds, properties, and sprites. After completing the course, students can further personalize their game, blending coding, creativity, and Valentine’s Day fun!

Instructions

When students log in, a pop-up will introduce them to the event. If they close the prompt, they can easily return to it by clicking on the "Events" tab in the left-hand menu.

Teacher Tips

  • No prior experience with Creator courses is needed!

  • You can write these challenges up on the board for students to try out once they've finished the game:

    • Open the object library and add 2 new characters to the game.

    • Change the song or the background.

    • Add an animation.

    • Change 3 properties such as size, color, and speed.

    • Ask CatBot 2 questions.

Sharing Their Work

Once students are happy with their game, they can click "Publish" to share it with friends and family. They’ll receive a unique link and can jot down their code to revisit their creation anytime.
