Students will be prepared to code apps, games, and websites in middle school by following our standards-based programming curriculum in elementary school.

Kodable's Scope and Sequence details the pacing for K-5 students to move through our scaffolded curriculum. Our scope provides competencies and resources to help guide your beginner, intermediate and advanced coders.

Here are some common concepts and skills that students will learn while using Kodable:

  1. Basic Programming Concepts: Students are introduced to fundamental programming concepts like algorithms, sequencing, loops, conditionals, and variables. They learn how to give instructions to their character to get through mazes.

  2. Problem-Solving Skills: Kodable presents students with puzzles and challenges that require them to use logic and critical thinking to solve problems. This helps develop their problem-solving skills.

  3. Coding Syntax: Depending on the grade level, students will learn basic coding syntax using a visual Kode Editor. The Kode Editor exposes them to coding languages such as C#, Python and JavaScript.

  4. Sequencing: Students learn the importance of sequencing instructions correctly to achieve desired outcomes. They understand that the order of commands matters.

  5. Loops: Concepts of loops are introduced, where students learn to repeat a set of instructions multiple times. This is a fundamental programming concept.

  6. Conditionals: Students learn about conditional statements (if-then-else) and how they can be used to make decisions in programs.

  7. Debugging: Kodable includes debugging exercises where students identify and fix errors in programs. This helps them understand the iterative nature of coding.

  8. Robotics and Animation: Students will see their code control virtual robots or characters, giving them a tangible understanding of how code impacts the digital world.

  9. Creativity: Students are encouraged to use their creativity to solve coding challenges. They may have opportunities to design and customize characters or mazes.

  10. Teamwork and Collaboration: Students are encouraged to work together on coding challenges, fostering teamwork and collaboration skills.

  11. Introduction to Algorithms: In more advanced levels, students are introduced to the concept of algorithms and how they are used in programming.
